CruiseCritic has an interesting article by Carolina Pirola with 15 tips for first time cruisers. These are the main points.
Since time ashore is limited, research ports in advance,
Don't pick a cruise based on a single port because it might be canceled.
Research the weather.
Pack with space and dress code in mind; consider only a carry-on.
Pick a cabin that meets your needs.
Research and select drink package before boarding.
Understand service charges; avoid accidentally double tipping.
Book flights that will accommodate flight delays.
Choose shore excursions carefully; if you take an independent shore excursion, make sure to get back in time or you will be stranded.
Board as soon as possible, do the muster drill, and orient yourself to the ship.
Avoid the buffet for the first lunch; other dining options are more relaxed.
Meet some of your fellow passengers ahead of time via social media; check out Facebook groups and Cruise Critic Roll Calls.
Read the daily cruise planner.
Understand the hidden costs beyond your fare, which may include bar tab, specialty restaurant fees, spa time, and fitness classes.
Be aware that Internet may be slow and expensive.
Don't be overwhelmed by all these details. A cruise vacation gives you a chance to relax, not stress out. Contace Jeff Dielle at +1 415-845-1336 or jeffdielle@gmail.com to discuss possibilities.
This is also a good refresher for experienced cruisers.
